How to Enhance and Email Photos

    Importing

    • 1). Scan a photo into your computer. When asked for a title, give it one, such as "Shore House.jpg." If asked where you want to scan it to, say "Desktop." Using the file format .jpg is standard for sending photos and readies it for mailing by compressing it, making it small enough so your recipient's computer will be able to open it. Saving to the Desktop makes it easy later to locate the file you want to send.

    • 2). Import a photo from your camera, if you don't have a scanner. In this case it will already have a name, something like "IMG_045.jpg." Move the file to the Desktop.

    • 3). Move the file from the Desktop into your photo program. It might be Photoshop Elements, iPhoto or another one.

    • 4). Open the file.

    Cropping

    • 1). Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (it looks like a plus sign) to isolate the part of the photo you want to work with.

    • 2). Hit "Image" and then "Crop." All extraneous matter will be removed. The terminology may be different, depending on your photo program.

    • 3). Use "Edit" and "Undo" and try again if you make a mistake.

    Adjusting

    • 1). Use Save-As and give it a different title if you want to save the original before enhancing, always a good idea.

    • 2). Examine your photo critically. Some photo programs have an "Auto Smart Fix" under "Enhance" that automatically adjusts contrast, lighting and color, but you can adjust them individually. Save the file.

    • 3). Double-check to see that the icon of your photo is on the Desktop.

    Emailing

    • 1). Navigate to your email and choose your recipient. Send your first try to yourself with a short message. It is polite to say you are attaching something.

    • 2). Look at the bottom of the screen. You will see a box with "Attach a file" over it. If you hit "Browse" or "Choose File," you will see a screen with all of the Desktop items listed. Select your file with the .jpg extension and choose "Open." You will now see the file in the "Attach a file" box. Move over a little and hit the grayed word "Attach." Wait a few moments and you will see the file switched to the "Attachments" box.

    • 3). Click on the "Send" button. The recipient will see your photo listed as an attachment in his email message and all he has to do is click on it to see it.
