How to Choose the Seat Size on a Saddle
- 1). Take a sturdy saddle rack and place it on a level surface. Using a saddle rack will make it easier to get a feel for the saddle you are considering.
- 2). Place a saddle firmly on the saddle rack. If you already own a saddle, you can use it to determine whether or not it fits your body. If not, you may be able to borrow a friend's saddle, or simply head down to the local tack shop where they will be happy to let you try the saddles they have for sale.
- 3). Pay attention to how the saddle fits your legs. Your legs should swing freely when seated in the saddle. If your legs feel cramped, the seat size is probably too small.
- 4). Take note of how the saddle fits your rear end. Your body should fit securely in the saddle without feeling cramped. If your seat feels loose while sitting on the saddle rack, it will feel even looser when mounted on your horse. If the seat feels cramped when you are trying it out, chances are the seat will be uncomfortable out on the trails.
- 5). Measure the saddle you are trying out to determine the seat size. For English saddles, extend a tape measure from the silver disc near the front of the saddle to the back of the seat. For a Western saddle, measure the seat by placing the tape measure at the back of the swell where the saddle horn or pommel is located, and extending it to the cantle at the rear of the seat.
