What"s in the Box?

There’s been a lot of hoopla about the release of the Pink Floyd box set but there are several other recent and forthcoming box set releases that should be on your list for consideration.

David Bowie – The David Bowie Box

David Bowie has made a lot of albums since his first one debuted in 1967. Over the years, he has reinvented himself several times, taking fresh stylistic approaches.

The David Bowie Box contains the five most recent of his catalog of 28 studio albums: Outside, Earthling, ‘hours…’, Heathen and Reality.

Each is a two-disc set (a total of 10 CDs) packaged in a reproduction of the original album cover. In each set, Disc 1 is the original release, and Disc 2 contains alternate mixes and outtakes.

This set serves as documentation of one of the many interesting phases in an interesting musical career, and a fitting tribute to the 40th anniversary of Bowie’s first album.

Emmylou Harris – Songbird: Rare Tracks and Forgotten Gems

And just what is Emmylou Harris doing on a classic rock Web site? I’m glad you asked.

The duo of Harris and Gram Parsons was largely responsible for bridging the gap between rock and country, in effect creating the country rock genre.

In the years after Parsons died of a drug overdose in 1973, Harris didn’t get involved in any other long-term performing partnerships, has collaborated with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Pretenders, Beck, Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Costello and Mark Knopfler, and has covered songs like Lennon-McCartney’s "For No One," Springsteen’s "Racing In The Streets" and Carole King’s "Child Of Mine."

As the title implies, this four-CD/one-DVD collection is not a "greatest hits" compilation, but a collection of tracks, many of them rare, hand-picked by the artist. The set is accompanied by a book in which Harris has written personal reflections and background on each track.

Harris’ talent isn't restricted by a single genre, as is vividly illustrated in this collection.

Previously noted ...

... but worthy of mentioning again are two box sets released as part of the Summer of Love 40th anniversary: Summer Of Love: The Hits Of 1967 and Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970.

The Traveling Wilburys Collection contains the band’s two albums and a DVD "making of" documentary.

In addition to sheer tonnage, the best box sets offer a large dose of non-musical entertainment (books, pictures, posters, memorabilia) that add an extra dimension to the listening experience.
