How to Learn to Drive With a Clutch Brake

    • 1). Find a large, empty lot or locate a road that is not often used. Just like learning to drive, it's easier to learn the basic technique of double clutching if your car is alone on the road.

    • 2). Turn over the engine, press down the clutch, then shift your engine into neutral. To get moving, you won't need to match your engine speed to the drive train speed (since your vehicle isn't moving). Shift into first gear, then press the accelerator as you release the clutch.

    • 3). Wait for the engine to speed up to the next necessary gear shift.

    • 4). Press in the clutch, shift the transmission into neutral, then release the clutch. This disengages the engine from the drive train. Since you are shifting to a higher gear, the engine won't have to go as fast to achieve the same road speeds. Now, watch the tachometer and listen watch your road speed. When you disengaged the engine, the clutch brake began slowing down the drive train.

    • 5). Wait for the engine to slow down to the RPM (revolutions per minute) required for the next gear. This is more of an art than a science, and will differ from engine to engine, so it will require a bit of trial and error. Proceed when you believe the engine has sufficiently slowed down.

    • 6). Press in the clutch, shift the transmission into the next gear, then press the accelerator as you release the clutch. For the health of you engine, do not try to force this process. If the engine speed is right, it will engage with the drive train. If it is not, the transmission will start making grinding sounds. If this happens, press the clutch, shift into neutral, and release the clutch.

    • 7). Repeat this process after adjusting the engine to match the drive train. If the engine was going too fast, wait for it to slow down further. If you stayed in neutral too long, and the engine speed dropped below the drive train speed, press the accelerator to increase the engine speed to the drive train speed.

    • 8). Continue shifting, using this technique, until you can reliably shift with the non-synchronous transmission.
