    • 1). Launch GIMP, and then click on the "File" menu and select "New." The "Create a New Image" dialog box appears.

    • 2). Select a unit of measure from the "Image Size" drop-down box, and then type your dimensions into the "Width" and "Height" combo boxes.

    • 3). Select a page orientation by clicking the "Portrait" or "Landscape" button.

    • 4). Click the plus sign next to the "Advanced Options" header to display these options.

    • 5). Select a unit of measure for your resolution from the drop-down box, then type your "X" and "Y" resolutions into the appropriate combo boxes. Common resolutions include 72 pixels per inch for Web projects and 300 ppi for print projects. Note that printing standards usually express in lines per inch or dots per inch, but GIMP expresses these measurements as pixels per inch.

    • 6). Select your color space. RGB displays your project in color, while grayscale displays it in shades of black, white and gray.

    • 7). Select your canvas type from the "Fill With" box. Selecting "Foreground Color" or "Background Color" fills your background layer with whatever color is currently set in the Toolbox. "White" results in a blank canvas, and "Transparent" results in a gray-checkered pattern, which does not export with your image.

    • 8). Add a comment into the comment box, if desired.

    • 9). Click "OK," when you are finished setting up your project.
