    Essentials

    • A list of essential items can differ based upon the car, the person driving the car and the state or region that they live in. This is because different climates, temperatures, weather conditions and age of a car can result in different emergencies. However, there are items that should universally be in every car, regardless of the age of the car or person; and where they live.

Peter Walsh, in his book, "Enough Already: Cleaning Mental Clutter to Become the Best You," states that "driving is one of the unsafest things to do and so you should always be prepared in case of an accident."

A first aid kit is essential because you never know what physical damage may occur in an accident. If you have an accident and are conscious and able to move; it is important to keep germs out of all cuts and abrasions; so make sure to have antibiotic cream in the kit.

Remember to always have jumper cables, flares and a spare tire in your car for any occasions when your battery may have died (maybe you left the lights on by mistake), you get a flat tire, or the car just breaks down. Flares are important because if the road is not well-lighted, people may not be able to see you or know you are there.

You should always travel with a flashlight with replacement batteries and comfortable walking shoes, in case you need to walk to an emergency phone to request help. If you have a cell phone, make sure to always have a car charger, just in case the battery dies. Walking shoes are important because even though you may have a cell phone, you may not get service in the area you break down in.

You should also have a supply of water and food, just in case you are stuck in your car for a lengthy period of time. This is so you don't starve or dehydrate. It is also helpful to have a blanket, in case you need to sleep in the car. This is helpful because the weather generally gets colder at night.

    Colder Climates

    • In areas and states that receive a lot of snow, and or colder weather, you should also make you have an ice scraper and salt or sand in your car at all times.
