Outlook Message Recovery
- Outlook has an email recovery tool called Recover Deleted Items. It can be found in the Tools menu when you view the Deleted Items folder. The tool brings up a list of emails that were retained by the server and are recoverable. The list's contents are available for only a limited time, typically seven days, though the time frame may vary.
- Emails in the list can be returned to the mailbox by clicking on the envelope icon at the top, which restores them to the mailbox's Deleted Items folder. From there, they can be refiled by simply dragging them into the appropriate folder.
- If a message was deleted by holding down the "Shift" key and pressing the "Delete" key, then it cannot be recovered in this way. That command bypasses the Deleted Items folder and removes the message from the entire mailbox. Some information technology departments, however, may be able to recover such messages by using a server backup.
