Who is the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion?
Money in the Bank 2014 took place on June 29, 2014 at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Michael Cole, JBL and Jerry Lawler were the commentators for this show.
- During the Kickoff Show which aired 30 minutes prior to the start of the pay-per-view, Daniel Bryan made his first appearance since being stripped of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship three weeks ago. He promised that he will return, but doesn't know when.
He might need to have another surgery done on his neck. Daniel Bryan was interrupted by Bo Dallas who gave him an inspiration and motivational speech. Bo told Daniel he can climb back to the top once again if he "Bo-lieves". The segment ended with Daniel Bryan telling Bo to "Bo-leave".
WWE Tag Team Championship: Champions Jimmy & Jey Uso vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) - The Wyatt family members got the advantage when Jey missed a high-flying move and went face-first into the ringside barrier. He eventually made the hot tag to his brother who hit both of his opponents with a Samoan Drop. Jimmy hit Harper with two Super Kicks but couldn't keep the big man down for three. The Wyatts took control of the match again when Luke Harper hit each brother with a suicide dive. Rowan tried some high-flying himself but was caught on the ropes. The brothers gave him a superplex and then each brother hit a splash off the top rope to get the win. Winners: Jimmy & Jey Uso
Divas Championship: Champion Paige vs. Naomi-Cameron was in the corner of her Funkadactyl partner, Naomi.
The big story going into this match is that there have been issues between the two Funkadactyls recently. Cameron was notably bored and disinterested during the match whenever Naomi had momentum going for her and waved her pom-poms in an understated way whenever her partner was in trouble. After Paige won the match with a DDT-like move, Cameron consoled her partner. Winner: Paige
Damien Sandow vs. Adam Rose - Damien Sandow was dressed up as Paul Revere while Adam Rose was escorted to his ring by his Rosebuds. After Damien Sandow missed a moonsault, Adam Rose hit the Party Foul to get the win. Winner: Adam Rose
- Due to an shoulder injury he suffered on Friday night, Bad News Barrett was not medically cleared to compete in the following match.
Money in the Bank Contract Ladder Match: Seth Rollins, Kofi Kingston, Rob Van Dam, Dolph Ziggler, Dean Ambrose, & Jack Swagger - Above the ring was a suitcase containing a contract for a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Zeb Coulter was outside of the ring as the representative of Jack Swagger. The key plotline of this match was the issues between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. A few weeks ago, Rollins turned on Ambrose and joined forces with WWE COO Triple H. The high-spot of this one saw Ambrose give his former friend a superplex off the top of a giant ladder. A few minutes later, Ambrose hurt his shoulder and was forced to the back by the WWE's medical staff. Later on in the match, Seth Rollins seemed like a certain winner before Dean Ambrose came back out and leveled Rollins with a chair. Before Ambrose could grab the suit case, Triple H's henchman Kane came out and pulled Ambrose off the ladder and then gave him a piledriver. Rollins then climbed the ladder, which Kane was holding steady for him, to win the match. Following the match, Triple H and Stepahnie McMahon came out to celebrate Seth Rollins' victory. Winner: Seth Rollins
Stardust & Goldust vs. Rybaxel (Curtis Axel & Ryback) - For those that missed the unveiling a few weeks ago, Stardust is the new alter ego of Cody Rhodes. Stardust came close to pinning Ryback after hitting the Cross Rhodes but only got a two count because Axel broke up the pin. However, their attempt to double team them failed when Curtis accidentally hit his partner. That allowed Stardust to roll up Ryback to get the win. Winners:Stardust & Goldust
Big E vs. Rusev- Rusev was escorted to the ring by Lana. When Big E went to spear Rusev on the ring apron, Rusev hit him with a knee to the head instead. Big E was able to get back in the match and was able to hit the move that he missed earlier in the match. Unfortunately, he was only able to get a 2 count out of the move. Rusev turned the tide with a desperation Sambo kick to the head and moments later applied the Accolade to get the win via submission. Winner: Rusev
Fandango is the Special Guest Referee: Layla vs. Summer Rae - Layla got the win after kicking Summer in the head. Following the match, Fandango kissed and danced with Layla while Summer Rae was holding back tears over watching her former boyfriend celebrating with his new girlfriend. Winner: Layla
Ladder Match for the Vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, John Cena & Kane - Prior to the start of the match, The Authority (Triple H and Stephanie McMahon) made their way to the ringside area. Paul Heyman was also at ringside during this match as the manager of Cesaro. At one point, Kane was the only man standing in the ring. Instead of trying to win the match, he picked Randy Orton up and put him on a ladder. Things didn't work out for Randy as the top of his head was cut open when Roman Reigns tipped over the ladder. Later in the match, Orton was alone in the ring with Kane again. This time, John Cena gave Kane an Attitude Adjustment and then gave another one to Randy Orton before grabbing the titles and becoming a 15-time world champion. Winner & New WWE World Heavyweight Champion: John Cena
What does this event mean for the future?
While the Authority has to be upset with the way this show ended, they still have a Plan B at their disposal to get the title back. Thanks to their enforcer, Seth Rollins has the Money in the Bank Contract. All they have to do is use their numbers advantage to beat down Cena whenever they want and then Seth Rollins is only three seconds away from winning the title.
Overall Thoughts
The problem with this show is that 14 of the company's biggest stars were in two matches. That left very little star power for the undercard. Because of that, most of this show felt like an episode of Main Event or Superstars. While both ladder matches and the opening bout were entertaining, they were not enough to save this show. If you paid for this one, I don't think it was worth the money. However, if you have the WWE Network it was definitely worth the price for June as you got two pay-per-view events as well as the awesome vault of on-demand content for only $9.99.
