The Advantages of Polarized Lenses

Polarized sunglasses have been used by fishermen and boaters for a long time. The polarized lenses reduce the glare caused by sunlight being reflected off the water around them. In recent years, outdoors enthusiasts of all kinds have discovered the benefits of polarized sunglasses, and their popularity has gone up. Golfers, bikers, joggers and others who spend long amounts of time out in the sun can benefit from using them.

Drivers, especially, can take good advantage of polarized lenses, as they reduce glare from long flat surfaces like roads and reflective car hoods. Post-cataract surgery patients and others with very light-sensitive eyes can use polarized lenses indoors to protect them from the effects of intense indoor lights, window lights, and light reflected off metal or glass.

How Polarized Lenses Work

Polarized lenses are vertically oriented, which allows them to fend off horizontally polarized light, this being the light that is reflected off of flat, smooth surfaces, such as large, still bodies of water, roads and other reflective areas. Thus, polarized sunglasses reduce glare, which can be not only irritating but dangerous too.

There is still some debate, however, among experts about whether polarized sunglasses work for snow sports, such as skiing or snowboarding. Some say that polarized lenses effectively help reduce glare cast off snow surfaces. Others point out, however, that polarized lenses, especially in snow, cause severe reduction of contrast, which can lead to snow patches and other obstacles becoming indistinguishable.

It's also not a good idea to wear polarized lenses when dealing with liquid crystal display screens, or LCDs. LCDs are used in navigation devices that are mounted on dashboards, as well as on many ATM screens. At certain angles, LCD screens viewed through polarized sunglasses become invisible.

For most outdoor sports and activities, however, polarized sunglasses provide a great advantage. You can find polarized lenses in a wide variety of styles, so there's one for every kind of outdoor enthusiast. Polarized photochromic lenses are especially good for light sensitive individuals, as they go from dark outside to light inside, and vice-versa. So whether for boating, driving, hiking, biking, or simply for spending a relaxed day at the beach, look for a good pair of polarized lenses to help you stay safe and comfortable.
