Saving Digital Camera Images While on Vacation

Vacation pictures are all about the memories and a digital camera is the perfect way to capture all of them. The only limiting factor to the amount of pictures you can take is storage space for all those images. Fortunately there are quite a few options when it comes to saving digital images while away from home.

At home you can download them to your computer as needed but when on vacation you need other options. If you have a laptop you can take it with you and use it as a mobile picture storage unit. There are a few considerations to take into account when taking a laptop on vacation.

First you need to determine just how much storage space you have on your hard drive and is it enough depending on how many pictures you think you may take. A general rule of thumb is 1 gigabyte of disk space will hold approximately one thousand images. If you have several gigabytes of space the chances of running out of space are slim.

Another thing to consider with a laptop is keeping the battery charged. The last thing you need to have happen is being unable to download your pictures turn on the laptop because the battery is dead. Be sure to double check that you will be able to plug in your laptop whatever your final destination may be.

If lack of space is an issue then consider taking burnable CDs or DVDs with you and copying your pictures from your laptop to either as you download them. You do need to make sure your computer has a burnable CD/DVD player to do this.

A portable hard drive is another avenue you can explore for storing picture images. They are easy to hook up using a USB cable and you can download to one from either your laptop or directly from the camera itself. A portable hard drive is relatively inexpensive and newer ones hold well over 100 gigabytes.

If a laptop or portable hard drive is not an option then you will have to resort to taking enough memory cards to store and transport all your vacation pictures. This is entirely do able but it can be somewhat of a hassle keeping track of them so it is a good idea to label them as they are used so you don't accidently reuse one and lose your previous set of pictures.

It all comes down to planning ahead to ensure that your vacation memories are kept safe for viewing once you return home. Do this and you'll be able to relive that experience with all your family and friends.
