Being A Responsible Florida Driver

Whether you are 16 or 76, if you live in Florida you probably have a car that you use to go to work, visit your friends and run your daily errands. Every driver that owns and operates a vehicle on the roads of the Sunshine State is required by law to carry Florida Auto Insurance.

If you wish to operate a motorized vehicle with at least 4 wheels, it is mandated that you get at least the minimum amount of insurance. In Florida, the minimum required amount of insurance is $10,000 for personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 for property damage liability (PDL).

Personal injury protection covers you for any injury you may sustain in an accident up to the limits of your policy and regardless of whether or not the accident was your fault. Also known as Florida No Fault Insurance, PIP also will cover passengers in your vehicle that do not have their own PIP insurance such as minor children and people that do not drive or own a car.

Under this coverage, you are protected up to the limit of the policy anytime an injury is sustained involving a motor vehicle. You do not have to be driving. You can be a passenger riding in another vehicle that gets in an accident with a truck or you can be an unfortunate pedestrian or bicyclist that gets struck by a car. In order to register a car or renew a license you must show and maintain the state-mandated minimum amount of PIP coverage.

The second mandatory component of Florida auto insurance is what is known as Property Damage Liability or PDL for short. This coverage insures you or other members of your immediate family against damage that you cause to another person's property while operating your vehicle. A typical 2 car accident usually is the fault of one of the two drivers and they would be held liable to the damage caused to the other vehicle. If you cause an accident, you are also responsible for repairing any damage to your vehicle. Most people also carry collision and comprehensive automobile insurance to protect their own vehicle in such situations.

Being a responsible Florida driver not only means buying and maintaining Florida auto insurance but also obeying all of the laws, rules and regulations that come with the privilege of operating a vehicle within the state. While one might try to get away as cheaply as possible by only purchasing the minimum amount of coverage mandated by Florida law, most responsible Florida drivers will purchase additional coverage that will better protect them as well as other drivers and vehicles on the road. If you do not have other medical coverage and you are seriously injured, the $10,000 PIP policy will probably be used up in just a day or two in the hospital. The same is true of the property damage that may result to both your vehicle and the other one that was involved in the accident. To avoid serious trouble in the future, it is very prudent to buy an adequate amount of automobile insurance.
