Braiding horse hair can be a fun way to spend time with your horse.
It makes them look better and it helps to prevent skin disease.
When you are first learning how to braid your horse's mane you will need to put in quite a bit of practice to get the hang of it.
A few tips should help you along.
The most important thing that you are going to want to do to make sure that braiding your horse's mane goes well is to thoroughly brush the hair before you start.
You want to make sure that you get all of the tangles out.
This can take quite a bit of brushing, horse hair gets a lot of tangles in it so make sure that you give yourself plenty of time for this.
You may find that it is easier to get the tangles out if you wash the hair first.
A good washing will take out a lot of the tangles on its own.
If you are going to wash the hair make sure that you do it a few days before you actually want to braid it.
Hair that is freshly washed is very slippery and it is hard to get it into braids.
If there are lot tangles in the hair you may want to use conditioner when you wash it, just make sure that you limit it to a very small amount.
You will find that when you start braiding the mane for the first time that it takes you quite awhile to get it done.
This can be a stressful for the horse since it is new for them as well.
It is therefore a good idea to break the job into shorter periods.
Allow the horse to walk around for a little bit between each session, this will make it a lot easier to get the horse to stand still while you are working.
An apron with a lot of pockets can be your best friend when you are braiding horse manes.
There is quite a bit of equipment that you have to have with you and having to run back and forth to get it is a real hassle.
This is especially true of things like needles and thread and elastic bands which get lost easily.
Having an apron with lots of pockets will let you carry everything with you while you work.
This will greatly speed up the process.
