Romance of the Sea and Power Boats

105 4
The romance of the sea seems to only kiss those who set sail into the sunrise, not those who fire up a motor and putter away from the boat launch.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Modern power boaters enjoy the allure of the oceans as much as anyone with a mainsail. They just haven't gotten much credit for their seaworthiness.

For owners of power boats, this is a quick compendium of how you can embrace the time-honored traditions of the people who ply the big water.

Lighthouses

One of the first things to learn is the importance of lighthouses in history and why there is such a desire to preserve them. Lighthouses were the beacons that saved many a boater from sure death on rocks and reefs, and guided him home from his sea adventures.

While most people probably think about lighthouses along the coasts of the Seven Seas, there also are many along the Great Lakes in the U.S. and the Mediterranean Sea. Even Switzerland has light houses.

There are nearly 15,000 lighthouses in the world and each has its own history and stories of the sea. You can at least learn more about the ones in your area, whether you live in the South Atlantic area of the U.S. or the west coast of Australia. One of the most complete directories, with more than 30,000 links to other websites with information, The Lighthouse Directory at http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/ will provide you more information than you could ever imagine existed about lighthouses.

Sea Myths

From mermaids to the Loch Ness monster, there are many water-borne myths that have been passed down through generations. From the Greek gods, such as Poseidon and his son, Triton, to the sea monsters, such as a kraken, there is some reason why these myths came into being. Finding out more, just do an Internet search on sea or ocean myths and you'll find plenty, can give you a little more flair when relating your sea-going adventures.

Pirates

The old stories of pirates give them a bit of romance that the modern stories of Somali pirates completely lack. You don't think about the depravity of the early pirates as you watch Johnny Depp strut across the screen as Capt. Jack Sparrow. But the blood thirstiness isn't as evident when you look back as it is when you look at the current news pages.

So as boat owners float along in their power boats, they can enjoy the irony of reading about the ancient myths on their new tablet computer, using the WiFi on your boat.

For power boats with which you can take to the high seas or just your favorite lake or stream, Florida-based EdgeWater Power Boats has many models from which to choose.
