How to Mix Ultram & Motrin
- 1). Schedule an appointment with your physician and discuss how mixing Ultram and Motrin will affect you. Bring a list of all the medications, supplements and herbal products you are currently taking, including prescription and nonprescription products. Inform your physician of any allergic reactions you have had to medications, supplements or food products.
- 2). Search reputable sights such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to better understand how Ultram and Motrin work once inside the body. Some websites will even allow you to search for up to three medications at one time and check for drug interactions. It is always important to do research before mixing any medications.

To lessen stomach upset, the Mayo Clinic website recommends eating a small meal or drinking a glass of milk a half hour before taking Ultram and Motrin. Taking Motrin on an empty stomach increases your risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers in the stomach lining. Ultram can cause nausea for some people when taken on an empty stomach. - 4). Wash your hands before opening any medicine container to prevent cross-contamination. The CDC reports that the best way to prevent illness and infection is to wash your hands frequently. By washing your hands before opening medicine containers, you can prevent germs on your hands from contaminating the medicine inside the bottle.
- 5). Take the exact dose of Ultram prescribed by your doctor as it is listed on your prescription bottle. If the Ultram does not cause stomach upset or nausea, then take the dose of Motrin as directed on the container. Swallow both medications with a full glass of water to prevent throat irritation or choking.
- 6). Monitor for adverse reactions because you could have a reaction that is different from those commonly reported. Ultram can cause drowsiness because of the way it affects brain chemicals, so do not drive or operate any kind of machinery until you know how Ultram affects you. Fluid retention, stomach upset, abdominal pain and heartburn are some of the reported side effects of Motrin.
