How to Build a Small Fishing Boat for Kids
- 1). Purchase boat plans from a reputable boat designer. The boat should be small enough for children to handle and large enough to easily carry their weight.
- 2). Lay the plywood on the floor of the garage or other work area large enough to hold a small boat. Use the pencil to transfer the plans to the plywood. Lay the plywood on the sawhorses and use the jigsaw to cut the plywood. When complete, there should be pieces for the bottom, sides and end of the boat.
- 3). Lay the plywood pieces together on the sawhorses according to the plans. Use the cordless drill and drill bit to drill holes 1/2 inch from the edge of the pieces that join each other. Use the wire cutter to cut the copper wire into 3-inch pieces. Use each piece of wire to thread through holes in the wood. Use the pliers to twist the wire to make a tight fitting. When complete, the pieces of wood will look like a boat with copper wire stitches at the seams.
- 1). Mix 1 qt. of epoxy according to the manufacturer's directions. Add enough sawdust to make a paste the consistency of peanut butter. Use the spatula to spread the epoxy paste on the inner seams of the boat to form a fillet. The epoxy paste fillet should be 2 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick at the center.
- 2). Cut the fiberglass cloth in 3-foot sections. Three-foot sections of cloth are easiest to work with. Lay the cloth over the epoxy seams. Mix 1 qt. of epoxy glue. Use a paintbrush to thoroughly wet the fiberglass cloth with the glue. Use a spatula to smooth the cloth over the epoxy paste. Allow to dry overnight.
- 3). Cut copper wire at the exterior of the boat. Use pliers to pull the cut wires from the boat. Discard the cut wires. The boat will now be fully shaped and rigid.
- 1). Thoroughly sand the boat. Mix the remaining epoxy glue. Roll the boat over on the sawhorses. Use the paintbrush to paint the epoxy glue on the bottom 2/3 of the boat. Allow to dry overnight
- 2). Sand off the boat again to prepare for painting or varnishing. Paint or varnish the boat. Allow to dry.
- 3). Add cleats and rowing hardware. Lock in the oars and launch the boat. Teach children how to properly row the boat.
