Why Empathy Is A Key Skill For Product Creation

There are a number of skills that are needed to create information products well.
One of the more valuable is empathy.
It sounds silly enough but being able to understand and predict another's feelings is a key skill.
Possibly one of the top five for developing successful products.
But why? Why is empathy so important to the creator of information or learning products? In this article I'm going to explain why empathy is a key skill for product creation.
When you are creating information or learning content products everything needs to start with the audience.
Your target audience is the most important element.
Define that well and success is almost inevitable.
Define them poorly and failure is almost guaranteed.
Your target audience defines who will buy your courses.
But it also defines how and where you will market it.
What your marketing focus will be.
And what message you will present about your course or book or other form of learning content.
To get the most from your target audience you need to understand what motivates them.
What are their emotional triggers that will drive your audience to buy your book or course? Where will they hang out? What are they interested in? All these form part of the information you need to develop about your target audience.
Motivation is most effective when it is the result of an emotional need.
Understand your target audience's emotions will help you to pinpoint what will motivate them the most to buy your product.
All you have to do is provide a course which will solve, achieve or avoid one of these emotional triggers.
But there's more to the benefits of empathy for your customer's needs.
Buying the first book is only the first step of being successful as producer of information products.
You see, you normally won't make much of a profit on your first product.
To be successful requires you to have multiple products.
And while a customer will buy multiple courses or books on their motivator, there is no guarantee they will buy from you.
To do that you need to turn them into a rabid fan who will buy all your products from you as soon as they are released.
One element to this is your ability to predict what problems they will have as they move towards your individual solution to their problem.
By anticipating and solving the customer's problems you will build up a reputation as someone who can anticipate and solve problems for the customer.
