How to Store a Magnetic Compass
- 1). Keep the compass out of direct sunlight, preferably in a pouch. According to Mad Mariner Magazine, the "sunlight can cause discoloration of the liquid and even the card, potentially shortening the effective life span of your compass."
- 2). Place the compass away from any magnetic devices and objects containing iron. Many common electrical devices exert a magnetic pull. Store the compass away from computers, speakers and radios.
- 3). Keep the compass in a closet or other area where it will not interact with magnetic or iron-containing materials. If you keep it in the closet, store it away from any heavy belt buckles. Do not keep the compass in the garage, as the magnetic field generated by electric motors may damage the compass.
- 4). Store the compass at room temperature. Keeping the compass out of extreme temperatures will prevent the liquid inside from either overheating and leaking out of the campus or freezing and cracking the compass.
