Creative Capital Grants
- Creative Capital supports artists and performers in five different disciplines: Emerging Fields, Innovative Literature, Film/Video and Performing and Visual Arts. The organization looks for artists, writers, film makers and performers whose work is timely, relevant and original. Artists who continually push the boundaries of their craft, but area disciplined and committed to following their projects through long-term should consider applying for grant funding. Grant applicants are reviewed in an open panel format, and the selection committee is made up of 100 reviewers who look at each applicant's capabilities, initiative and likelihood for success within the Creative Capital program.
- The Creative Capital approach is four-pronged: Support the Project, Support the Individual, Support Community and Engage the Public. The way the organization does this is by developing a long-term relationship with each of the grant recipients. This unique approach to grantmaking offers artists support similar to what an entrepreneur would find in an investor. The artist receives not only financial support for their project, but also advisory support to give the artists the business skills needed to succeed in their industry. Each artist is provided with a flexible program of support that includes career development, mentoring and one-on-one consulting.
- The Creative Capital grant cycle is three years. Year one focuses on issuing grants in Visual Arts and Film/Video. Year two awards grants to Performing Arts, Emerging Fields and Innovative Literature. In the third year, no new grants are funded, and Creative Capital focuses on tracking the progress of the grants distributed in years one and two and supporting individuals in the process of completing their projects.
- In addition to grantmaking, Creative Capital offers professional development workshops for artists across the country. The Professional Development Program (PDP) launched in 2003 and has shared its methodologies with over 3,700 artists in 50 communities across the U.S. PDP offers evening sessions, one-day sessions and weekend workshops where artists can learn skills including self-management, fund-raising, communication and promotion. PDP even offers Internet training sessions where artists who are not close to a physical workshop can still benefit from Creative Capital's expertise.
