How to Stop a Dog From Howling at Fire Engines
- 1). Command your dog to sit and stay each time a fire engine is passing by.
- 2). Reinforce the desired behavior by saying "No" if the dog barks, howls or shows indications he is about to. Do not yell, as your dog may think you're howling too.
- 3). Reward the dog immediately if she remains silent while the fire engine passes. Give verbal praise, attention or a special treat.
- 4). Continue to reinforce the desired behavior (silence) and correct unwanted behavior (barking or howling) until your dog learns what you expect.
