How to Make Customer Service Reduce Overdraft Fees
- 1). Visit your bank branch and speak with a representative or branch manager. Have a good reason why the overdraft fees should be waived, and include any available proof if the bank made the error.
- 2). Be prepared to deposit enough money to bring your account to a positive balance, to assist with the negotiation process. Some banks may be willing to reduce one or more overdraft charges if they know you are prepared to settle any other negative balances.
- 3). Contact the customer service representative over the phone if you are too far from a branch or would prefer speaking to someone over the phone. Be cordial with the representative. If you feel he is not going to reduce the fees, you can try to speak with another representative.
- 4). Ask to speak with a budget specialist or account specialist. Sometimes a specialist can suggest how you can improve your banking relationship and reduce the risk of incurring overdraft fees. Asking for help with preventing overdraft fees from occurring may be reason enough for the specialist to reduce the fees.
- 5). Threaten to take your business elsewhere. This option should be a last resort, but if the overdraft fees are too large to pay back any time soon, ask to speak to a manager and tell him that you're prepared to patronize another bank that is willing to be more flexible. Banks generally will not want to lose your business over overdraft fees.
