How to Speed Up a NetZero Dial-up Connection for Free
- 1). Upgrade your existing connection to NetZero's "Accelerated Dial-Up Service" (see Resources for link). This accelerated service is five times faster than the basic dial-up connection. The first month is free.
- 2). Clear your Web cache. Click the Windows-logo button on the lower-left-hand of the screen and select "Control Panel." Click "Classic View" in the left pane. Double-click "Internet Options." Click the "General" tab when a new dialog box opens up. Click the "Delete..." button under "Browsing History." Check "Temporary Internet files" and "Cookies." Click the "Delete" button again.
- 3). Use a shorter telephone line to connect your dial-up modem with your computer. The shorter the cable, the fewer the interferences and the better the connection speed.
- 4). Close unused programs and browser windows. Certain applications use up your dial-up bandwidth even when they are not used. Press "Ctrl"+"Alt"+"Delete" keys to launch "Task Manager." Click the "Processes" tab. Scroll down the list of processes and find the ones that you know for sure you are not using. Click the entry and select "End Process." Right-click quick-launch icons of unused programs on your taskbar notification area (next to the clock) and select "Exit."
- 5). Download a different Web browser. Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are relatively faster than your default Internet Explorer. You can download these browsers for free (see Resources).
- 6). Increase modem port speed. Click the Start menu and then select "Run..." If you use Windows 7, type "run" (without the quotes) and press the "Enter" key. Type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press the "Enter" key. Scroll down the list of devices listed under "Device Manager" and locate "Modems." Double-click to expand its contents. Right-click on your dial-up modem device and select "Properties." Click the "Modem" tab in the new dialog box. Click the "Maximum Port Speed" drop-down menu and choose the highest possible selection.
