The festive, often brightly colored toy hanging above the a baby's crib is called a mobile.
Just like with any baby there are tons of different models out on the market but getting the best one might be confusing.
Some models of mobiles hang on strings and do not move other than with the breeze while others are self-spinning.
Doctors have researched for years as to the pros and cons of one style or another.
Let's discuss a few of the choices we have out there.
First off, at such an early age, having the right amount of visual and aural stimulation is important in the neural growth of the child.
It is best to find a healthy balance between too little stimulation and over-stimulation.
Regardless of the style, it is recommended to have the mobile at least 12 inches above the infant as newborns have a difficult time seeing right in front of them.
When the child learns to stand it should be removed from the crib to avoid choking, strangulation or getting a limb caught in the cables of the mobile.
What types of mobiles are recommended? For starters, search for an fun, educational mobile that will brighten up a child's life.
It might not seem important to begin the education process at such an early age but remember that every moment for a newborn is an educational experience.
So finding mobiles with actual animals or shapes versus cartoon creatures such as Telle-tubbies that don't equate to the real world.
This way you can point a star, for instance, and say the word star.
You can choose animals, shapes, colors, celestial beings and even photos of mountains, trees or the like.
What to avoid when choosing a mobile? As I mentioned before, avoid using non-real world creatures on the mobile.
While it looks cute, you may be missing out on an education moment.
Avoid hanging the mobile too low or too high.
A child's site is very specific at that age of development.
Too high and the child may strain his/her eyes.
Too low and they may not be able to focus well.
Whatever you decide for your mobile, keep in mind that we want the child to look at and enjoy the mobile since it is all that the baby will be looking at for a good period of time.
Avoid bland colors.
Imagine if you only had one thing to look at for a while.
What would you choose, a grey bunch of random shapes or bright colored fun shapes? Good luck finding that perfect mobile for your perfect baby!
