Fall Tv Premiers - One Down, Many To Go

In its adulthood, television now pushes the envelope of acceptability and expectation. Putting aside raised eyebrows and shock factors, just consider how viewing audiences expect that plots, if unbelievable, must at least be PORTRAYED believably to gain fans and points in the ratings.

Today's TV programming offers something for everyone--that's an apt description for the vast array of television shows available this season.

The assortment from channel to channel continues with 21st Century gladiatorial excitement and reality television for the masses, the nuances of murder and medical mystery, history, and more--even another season of a series whose hero is a serial killer. That last one could make Americans rethink their anti-censorship stand! It's certainly a kidney punch to folks introduced to TV by Mr. Wizard and Howdy Doody in the 1950s.

Good writing, realistic acting, and remarkable cinematography have frequently met public demands to produce some extremely entertaining television--particularly in series like NCIS with riveting new seasons as well as reruns. Actors in this murder investigation/forensic series with a military twist portray such a diverse group of characters, each bringing a vivid representation of personality, quirk, and intelligence to interact with other characters during every episode.

This season, the producers of NCIS sought to repeat their success with a spin-off. Tuesday, they aired the premier version of the new series, "NCIS: Los Angles," back-to-back with an episode of the original NCIS--big mistake!

As fans of the original NCIS, my family was bivouacked in the living room awaiting both dramas. The first NCIS absorbed us 100 percent as it had in the past. Unsure whether it was a rerun of last year's finale or a new episode, we watched vignettes and heard character expositions on each of the protagonists from Tony DiNozzo (Mr. Obnoxious-come-Hero), and winced as Ziva David was beaten mercilessly. Each character was true to form, Good Guys with quirks and foibles, interacting with the plot for glimpses into new aspects of personality and possibilities for future episodes.

Fifteen minutes into the new NCIS: Los Angeles series, we just sat. If premiers showcase the best a new series has to offer, then NCIS: Los Angeles did not challenge NCIS for first place. Is that an unfair comparison--maybe. As humans, we generally prize the original over reproductions--so, my fan loyalty remains with Gibbs and the gang on the other side of the continent. In the interim, there are dozens of other new shows that promise excellent television.
