Nobody really knows the answer to the question "what is my ideal weight"?
Some people like to judge it for themselves based on whether their favorite dress is too tight or their skinny jeans no longer close.
Others will base their answer on what the bathroom scales say while some of us will just rely on the mirror for the proof that the diet book is needed once again.
Doctors and health professionals will take a more scientific approach. Whilst a lot of us think our ideal weight is what we weighed as a teenager, this is not realistic. Your body will have been through a number of changes since then all of which can impact your weight.
So how does a doctor measure your ideal weight? Most professionals will use the body mass index to assess your weight. They take your weight in kilograms and your height in meters. You then divide your weight by your height squared. So if your weight was 60 kilos and your height is 1.5 metres then your BMI would be equal to 60/(1.5x1.5) i.e. 26.66 which would make you overweight.
Using the BMI statistics the ranges are as follows:
BMI under 18.5 = underweight
BMI 18.5 - 24.9 = normal
BMI 25- 29.9 = overweight
BMI 30-39.9 = obese
BMI 40 or over =extremely obese
You should consult your doctor if you fall into the obese or extremely obese level as there may be an underlying health problem causing the weight gain. Even if there is no illness present, you will still need their help as you should not begin an exercise program without their supervision. The risk of having a stroke or a heart attack is too high.
If you do not believe that establishing your BMI will help you to answer the question "what is my ideal weight" then you could use the waist measurement indicator. You simply measure the fattest point around your hips and measure the point around your belly button. Divide your hip measurement by your waist measurement. Ideally you want an answer of less than 1 - the closer to 0.75 the better!
