Rental Car and Extra Driver Rules

Many different reasons exist for renting a car, including needing an extra vehicle or when traveling away from home. Rental car companies can be found all over the United States. The AAA website states that the car rental industry is not regulated and so renters must be aware of each company's policies. (See reference 1) Each rental car company enforces its own rules regarding rental car use and situations like extra drivers. - When renting a vehicle from Enterprise or Alamo (both are owned by the same company), renters must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver's license and credit card, states the Enterprise website. (See reference 2) Extra drivers may be added to the policy for $10 a day per driver and each of those drivers must be 21 and have a valid driver's license. Spouses and domestic partners of the principle renter are considered an extra driver with no extra charge. Extra drivers must sign the rental agreement and be present with the principle driver when picking up the car.

Alamo.com - Renters of Dollar Rent A Car must be at least 21 years of age and in some instances an underage fee will be charged for renters under 25, according to the Dollar Rent A Car website. (See reference 3) Renters must show proof of valid driver's license and credit card at time of rental. Any additional drivers must fulfill the age and rental requirements and must sign the rental agreement at time of rental.

Renters must be at least 21 years of age, and some rental locations impose an under-age fee for renters under 25, according to the Budget website. (See reference 4) Drivers may undergo a driving background check and must hold a valid driver's license. Budget and Avis charge for additional drivers in all states, except California. Spouses and domestic partners do not incur extra driver expenses.

(See reference 5) Renters must also have a valid driver's license and valid form of payment, such as a credit card or debit card. Additional drivers must be 21, also hold a valid driver's license and sign an additional driver form. The fee for extra drivers runs around $13 per day per driver.
