Why Telemarketers Are Not Allowed To Call Your Cell Phone

Under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, telemarketers are banned from calling you via your cell phone.
Though this does not apply to telemarketers that would dial your number by hand, you will have a hard time finding such a firm.
Almost all of them use an auto-dialer or some other means of calling your number.
Some are ignoring this, however, and they may even be using caller ID spoofing to get you to answer.
One of the biggest reasons why telemarketers are not allowed to call your mobile phone is because it could very easily cost you money.
It depends on your contract or your prepaid plan, but some calls do cost money.
Cell phones are also very personal in nature, as they are with us at all times.
Those who are calling you on this type of device are breaking the law and should be reported.
If they are using caller ID spoofing to call you, this might be hard because you could be reporting the wrong company.
You may have heard that your mobile number or numbers will be available to anyone through a public directory.
This is something that has been considered.
However, the idea was quickly shot down by consumers and many of the phone companies, as they wish to please their customers.
One of the biggest fears in relation to this was that telemarketers would call by getting your number through such a directory.
Even if it did exist, they would still be exempt from calling you on your cell.
In the event that such a directory ever does come into being, you should know that it will most likely be opt-in only.
This means that you do not have to be included, and the only way you will be is if you specifically ask to have your number in the directory.
If this concerns you, keep your eyes on the news to see if such a thing is going to be considered again in the future.
To totally protect yourself, you can always add your mobile numbers to the Do Not Call list just as you may have done with your landline number.
When you get a call on your cell phone that you know is a telemarketer, you should report them to your phone company immediately.
If they are using caller ID spoofing, you may not know how to report them, but you may get their real number by using their company name to find a number.
You can also put any numbers that came up without a name by searching through a database of numbers.
