How to Stop Disrespectful Teens
- 1). Tell yourself that you cannot take your teenager's behavior personally. He might say that he is embarrassed by you and you are meaner than everyone else's parents, but you should not allow your feelings to be hurt. Your teenager is looking to lash out at somebody, and often it is the person closest to him. Do not overreact to these statements that your teen is making.
- 2). Ignore certain behaviors. Eye rolling, stomping, muttering under her breath and slamming her bedroom door are all ways of expressing her feelings. It is impossible to end all undesirable behaviors, so some will have to be ignored.
- 3). Tell him that some behaviors are simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Calling people names, yelling or being rude are all unacceptable behaviors. Send your teenager to his room immediately after any of these behaviors are displayed and when he calms down, let him know that his actions are not permitted.
- 4). Set consequences for all unacceptable behaviors. Try taking away cell phone privileges or not allowing her to go out with friends for a night.
- 5). Model behavior that you would like your teenager to follow. You must always be respectful, never use inappropriate language or show inappropriate language. You are a role model for your teenager.
