Many people don't realize that a diet for lowering cholesterol can be just as effective as cholesterol medication when done properly.
You may have seen the article that I read a few weeks ago about a doctor who ended up using exercise and diet to reduce cholesterol when he experienced muscle damage due to the cholesterol medication he was taking.
Amazingly, he was able to reduce his lipid levels by more than what most of his patients were experiencing with the medication that he had prescribed for them.
Let's take a look at some important guidelines for cholesterol lowering diets.

) Reduce saturated fat consumption.
Do not make the mistake of eliminating all fats as this can be detrimental to your physical and mental health.
But cutting way back on red meats that contain high levels of saturated fats can quickly bring about a reduction in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol readings.

) Increase the amount of high fiber foods such as vegetables and fruits whenever possible.
Take some simple steps such as adding spinach to the sandwiches you eat.
A favorite meal of mine is broiled salmon over a bed of spinach.
Fiber is one of the most effective natural substances for eliminating cholesterol from the body.

) Take snacking seriously.
Plan ahead so that you have cholesterol lowering snacks on hand instead of things like potato chips and dip.
Some of my favorites are a handful of walnuts or salsa served with baked tortilla chips.
Remember, a diet for lowering cholesterol is not a crash diet.
Using common sense and moderation, design a menu to lower cholesterol that increases the amounts of foods that contain fiber and omega-3 fatty acids while reducing saturated fat intake.
