How To Get Compelling eBay Listings Written

If you are selling new goods on eBay, your supplier may provide the sales copy that you can use in your eBay listing. But if other eBay sellers are using the same supplier and sales copy, you'll need to change yours to emphasise your Unique Selling Proposition (USP), even if you just add a FREE Bonus.

You can pay a copywriter to write the sales copy in your eBay listing for you. But make sure that they are an experienced DIRECT RESPONSE copywriter as you don't want your eBay listing to build "brand awareness" - you want it to motivate its readers to buy NOW - and buy from YOU, not your competitors!

But successful copywriters with a proven track record may charge $1,000s to write your sales copy for you.

Or you can learn to write sales copy yourself. Every copy writing course that I studied said the same thing: COPY other people's copywriting! This doesn't mean copy someone else's listing word for word and rip them off!

It means if you see some sales copy that is particularly well-written (AND IS SELLING WELL), think why it is so effective and consider doing something similar (but NOT exactly the same) yourself. It doesn't have to be a competitor's eBay listing. It could be an eBay listing in a completely different market. Or it could be from somewhere other than eBay.

EVERY successful copywriter that I know of has a "swipe file" where they keep every good piece of copywriting that they come across and use it as a reference library. When they need to write some sales copy, they flick through their swipe file looking for ideas that they can use. They are looking for words and phrases that might have been used to sell something completely different that they can adapt and alter to suit the product that they are selling. If a certain combination of words has worked to motivate people to buy a product, that same combination of words can be tweaked to sell YOUR product.

Stop cursing the postman every time junk mail lands on your doormat. Instead you should thank him for bringing you a free copywriting resource library! Why do companies keep sending junk mail when we all hate it so much? Because it works! It costs a fortune to compile a mailing, get it printed and send it to thousands and thousands of homes. Companies wouldn't spend so much money on junk mail if it didn't generate additional sales. Junk mail is just another form of direct marketing - just like your eBay listing. Both rely on the written word to motivate people to buy. So keep your junk mail in your swipe file and look at it to get ideas that you can adapt and apply to your listings.

Once you've finished compiling your eBay listing, try to read it as if you are a potential customer. How do you (the seller) come across? Do you seem honest and trustworthy or pushy and "in your face"? Is there enough information to enable you (as the buyer) to decide to buy or are there any questions you would need to ask first? What are the payment terms, shipping terms, returns policy, etc? Are they obvious and clear and more than reasonable? Or are there too many "ifs" and "buts"? Is the listing clear and easy to read or complicated and confusing?
