When one uses the service of a tourist guide, always made sure that he goes to the places according to the itineraries. We had used the service of a tourist guide when we went to Bandung, Indonesia a few years ago. We noticed that on the last day of our trip he did not take us to one of the caves stated in the itinerary. When we mentioned it to him, only then he took us there without even apologizing to us. Had we not mention about the place, he might skip it from the itinerary.

A good tour guide always explains the history of the places visited. For example, there was an Opium Museum at the Golden Triangle, the border of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. At first we wondered why they had to build such a museum as opium is a drug and as to my knowledge, it is not beneficial to humans when it is misused. After explained by the tourist guide, we then understood the history behind the Opium King and the Opium Museum.

When choosing a guided tour, always ask if there are alternatives places that one could go rather than the ones in the itinerary. For example, my family and I are not craze in shopping. We prefer to go to scenic places away from the hustle bustle of the city. Therefore when we contacted the tour agency, we requested to go to a scenic area rather than places where the main focus is to go shopping. In China, we were brought to view the Muslims settlement instead of going to a shopping center. In addition a good tourist guide will give suggestions places which he thinks will be enjoyable for specific holiday makers.

Meals are normally included in a guided tour. The tour guide will take the visitors to restaurants according the budget allocated. A good tour guide will take the opportunity to introduce the special dish of that country. When the food is brought to the visitors, a good tourist guide will give a brief explanation about the meal and how it is eaten. He will also make sure that the visitors are comfortable once they are seated in the restaurant. Once when we were in a restaurant in Beijing, we were puzzled when the waiter brought a peculiar dish that we don't know how to actually eat it. The tourist guide did not even explain to us about the dish until we nearly finish eating. It was quite disappointing!
As Muslims, it is obligatory for us to pray 5 times a day or three times if we are travelling far. Therefore the tourist guide who has Muslim visitors must willingly stopped at mosques to enable them to pray whenever they have to. This could be planned earlier if the tourist guide knows where the location of the mosque in the area that they are going to visit. There were not many mosques in Chiang Mai but during our trip there, our tourist guide made sure that we had time to perform our prayers before we proceed to the next destination.
