As you might expect there are side effect to almost every drug and risks associated with medical procedures and surgeries.
This is no less true for Depression treatments.
Let's take a look at some treatments and then the side effects for each one.
Treatments and Side Effects VNS - Vagal Nerve Stimulation is done by surgically placing a pace maker type device in the chest and linked to the Vagal Nerve.
The Vagal Nerve runs from the neck to the brain and is believed to affect mood.
Once the device is implanted regular electric pulses are sent along the Vagal Nerve to stimulate it and to lift the moods of patients.
Side Effects: There is concern there may be cardiovascular issues.
There have been headaches reported and swelling toward the back of throat has been reported as well.
ECT- Electroconvulsive Therapy is done by administering a general anesthetic and a muscle relaxer at the same time.
Electrodes are placed on the head and small "shocks" are delivered to the patient.
A seizure should erupt if it was performed correctly.
Only small movements in the hands and feet will be observed due to the muscle relaxer.
Once the patient awakens they will be very confused and remember nothing surrounding the treatment.
Side Effects: Side effects that have been reported are memory loss, reoccurrences of seizure activity, and later on movement disorders have occurred.
TMS - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is done using a hand-held magnetic coil.
As electric pulses are shot through it, the coil is passed over the scalp.
The currents go through the skull to directly stimulate nerve cells.
Though experimental this procedure has great potential.
Side Effects: There are no known negative effects with this procedure.
Herbal Supplements are all natural and safe.
They are a blend of herbs that are known to affect mood with vitamins, minerals, and other nutritive substances in a specific formula.
To ensure the quality, efficacy, and potency of the herbal supplements the metabolism of each ingredient should have been tested at the molecular level.
The interactions of the ingredients should also have been observed.
When they are manufactured it should be according to pharmaceutical grade standards.
Side Effects: There are very few if any side effects to herbal supplements.
Headaches might develop or dry mouth but nothing more has been noted.
You are cautioned though if you are taking prescriptions for other conditions that you consult with your doctor because herbal supplements could reduce the effectiveness of those medications.
Anti-depressants fall into four groups or classes and work on the chemicals in the brain.
Two neurotransmitters Serotonin and Norepinephrine affect moods.
These drugs work on changing the levels of these chemicals in the brain or making more of those chemicals that are already present more available for the brain to use.
Side Effects: There are some very serious side effects including possible death.
Headaches, digestive disturbances, weight loss or gain, and sleep problems have been reported.
A bothersome side effect is a reduction in your sex drive (for both genders).
The most serious side effect is suicidal thoughts, suicidal attempts and sadly successes.
Conclusion There are side effects related to depression treatments that are very serious including possible death.
Suicidal ideation is seen most typically in children and young adults who take antidepressant medications.
Other treatments such as ECT or shock therapy can cause memory loss, recurring seizure activity, and/or movement disorders.
Herbal supplements have few if any side effects and there are no known side effects with TMS- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
