Legal Immigrant Student Grants
- The Fulbright grant program is not administered by any particular university; it is a program in which many government and private institutions participate. The program focuses primarily on students studying a scientific or technological discipline, and is only available to students from countries that participate in the Fulbright program. The Fulbright grant program offers various scholarship and grant programs for students pursuing eligible majors.
- The Institute of International Education offers a number of science and technology grant programs, some of them available to students who are neither citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. The Global Engineering Education Exchange arranges programs for engineering students at 85 universities in 17 countries, including the U.S. It also arranges financial support for industrial internships in a variety of technical fields.
- The Open Society Foundations are dedicated to promoting democracy, education, human rights, public health and a free press. It offers grants and scholarships to both students and others who aim to promote these values. The Open Society Foundations were founded by investor George Soros. Worldwide, it has been responsible for distributing more than $8 billion in grants and other forms of financial aid.
- Most international students rely on either their own resources or grants offered by universities in their home countries. A number of U.S. universities, however, offer scholarships to international students meeting particular qualifications. Most of these grants are available to graduate students rather than undergraduate students. Competition is fierce, and scholarships are offered only to the very best students.
- Many nongovernmental organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the League of Red Cross Societies and the World Council of Churches offer limited scholarships and grants to international students studying in the U.S. Most are available to a restricted range of students, such as students who study a particular discipline or who are members of particular ethnic groups.
