Unfortunately, there are regions of the world where political unrest has brought desperation to the innocent civilians caught in the middle of treacherous gunfire and warfare.
For the individuals who flee their homes in order to avoid certain death, refugee status has allowed them to pursue new lives in other sovereign states.
Though the process, can be quite complex.
Nearly 80,000 individuals go through this process yearly.
It begins with the submission of information to the Refugee Data Center (RDC) in New York.
While in this system, each person is matched with a voluntary reception and placement agency.
Refugees must be briefed before entering the country.
The person has to understand that individuals are expected to be self-sufficient while living in the United States.
Within 2 years, the pre-travel conditions must be met.
They include: The Assurance Process The assurance process is the process by which the volunteer resettlement organization notifies the Department of State that it is ready to receive the refugee.
The organization determines where the individual will live, and also prepares appropriate housing, employment, and needed services.
Medical Clearance All incoming individuals are screened by a trusted healthcare professional.
This is done in an effort to identify medical conditions that require either additional follow up or that may constitute a threat to public health.
There are a few serious conditions that may render a refugee ineligible for US entry.
Security Clearance Security clearance is required for all individuals.
Depending upon to country of origin, the level of clearance varies.
A "name check" is submitted and crosschecked against the Federal Bureau of Investigation's database of known terrorists and criminal masterminds.
The name is also checked against the State Department's database of people who have been denied visas for entry to the United States in the Past.
Cultural Orientation Cultural education is administered to individuals before they arrive in order to reduce the impact of culture shock.
Self-sufficiency is highly stressed as an integral part of the United States' cultural mentality.
Once the pre-travel arrangements have been executed, the individual may enter the United States.
He may then begin resettlement in the United States.
Within the first thirty days, the individual must apply for social security numbers, register his children into the local schools, get a thorough medical evaluation, and enroll in comprehensive English Language Training.
