The city of Anaheim occupies 50 square miles in the heart of Orange County in Southern California. According to the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau, the city draws more than 40 million visitors annually. Though Anaheim is known primarily for its theme parks, the city offers a much broader selection of family-oriented activities and attractions. - Disneyland Resort in Buena Park encompasses two theme parks, the original Disneyland Park and Disney's California Adventure Park. The former opened its doors in July 1955. It features eight themed areas and now classic rides such as Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain and other attractions featuring Disney's beloved characters. The latter opened in 2001 and is divided into four California-themed areas that, as its name suggests, celebrate the state's heritage. Visitors have the option of staying at one of three Disney-owned hotels at the resort. Children under the age of 3 are admitted free. - Medieval Times is an 11th century-themed dinner theater with nine locations throughout North America, including one in Buena Park. The show's story line features romance and a medieval joust between six knights complete with horses, weapons and a trick-performing falcon. As of October 2010, the meal consisted of garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, oven-roasted chicken, spare rib, herb-basted potato, a pastry, coffee and two rounds of beverages. A vegetarian meal is also available. In true 11th century fashion, patrons must eat with their hands. There is also a full bar for adults. - Located in neighboring Long Beach, the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to more than 12,500 animals representing approximately 1,000 different species found in the Pacific Ocean. The aquarium's largest exhibit is the Tropical Reef Habitat, which contains 350,000 gallons of water and more than 1,000 fish. The most popular exhibit is the Shark Lagoon, the first full-scale shark touch exhibit in the United States, which contains more than 200 sharks, some of which can be touched. The aquarium is also home to a rare giant pacific octopus, the largest known species of octopus. In addition, visitors can purchase nectar to feed to the colorful residents of the Lorikeet Forest.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Christmas Day and during the Long Beach Grand Prix weekend. Children under the age of 3 are admitted free. Contact the aquarium for other admission rates.
