Ultra Wheels DBS Cylindrical Brake

The Ultra Wheels Disc Brake System (DBS) was based on a cylindrical brake designed to roll in the same direction as the wheels on an inline skate. There was a disc-braking system inside each brake cylinder to provide additional braking power when the brake was applied.

The system was introduced around 1994 at a National Sporting Goods Association trade show in Chicago to give inline skaters more confidence, control and maneuverability than other inline skate braking systems at that time.

Like many other new braking systems of the era, DBS was designed to stop faster and easier than traditional friction skate brakes. There were other advantages with Ultra Wheels Disc Brake System:
  • More durable than friction brakes.
  • DBS was interchangeable between the left and right skate.
  • Smaller brake size made it easier to do tricks or stunts without any brake interference
  • More effective on steep hills for advanced skaters.
  • Easier to slalom downhill with controlled speed.

DBS was also promoted as a good solution for braking while turning, braking during backward skating backwards and braking over rough or unusual surfaces in inline skates.

How the DBS Braking System Worked

DBS allowed skaters to stop without the need to push hard to brake the skates and without learning new skating techniques. This was accomplished because DBS included three braking styles in one system:
  1. The skater applies pressure to an external roller brake to create friction against the skating surface.
  2. The internal disc and drum brakes apply pressure on the DBS's vertical and horizontal rotating surfaces to make the brake to roll slower.

  1. The external roller brake grabs the road as the internal brakes slow down the rotation.

The DBS braking system was available on three Ultra Wheels skate models back in February of 1995:  The Ultra-Air, The Great One, and the Katarina Allure. These skates are no longer in production by the Ultra Wheels company.

The Ultra Wheels DBS braking system is just one of many new and old stock and aftermarket inline braking systems like Oxygen Power Braking, PBS Brakes,  Rollerblade ABT Braking System, Roces Tartaruga, Powerslide Universal Brakes, Hydraulic BrakesPressure Activated System, Flex Brakes, DXS Inline Skating Disk Brakes and Gravity Master that can be found on new and used skating equipment or added as an upgrade. Even with all this new technology, traditional friction brakes are still around.
