How to Make a Slip Leash
- 1). Measure your dog's neck and decide how long you want your lead to be. Take that total length and add 5 to 7 inches to it for the ring and the handle area.
- 2). Pick the material for your lead. While nylon and rope are easy and obvious choices, you can also use braided cotton or any other fabric that you like.
- 3). Thread one end of your lead into your metal ring. Metal rings have pressure rings that will tell you how much force they can withstand. For instance, if you have a 50 pound dog, the ring should be tested to at least 50 pounds. Make sure yours will work for your pet. Fold the end of your lead over the metal ring.
- 4). Sow your lead together. After folding the lead back over the metal ring, you will use a heavy duty needle to sow the material together. Try to get as close as you can to the metal ring. Your slip lead should now look like a long piece of material with a ring sown to the end.
- 5). Put the opposite end through the metal ring. You will push it through until it is about halfway down the length. You will see that the lead now makes a circle. This circle is what you will slip over your pet's head. You will then gently pull the end without the ring to tighten the leash.
