Horse Information for Children
- Horses come in all sizes from miniatures with adult heights as small as 17.5 inches (Thumbelina) to draft breeds with heights in excess of 19 hands (76 inches).
- Each of the many breeds of horses has a unique set of body characteristics, including head and body shape, color, mane and tail composition, weight and personality.
- Horses today are used mostly for pleasure, but in some cultures they are still used for work including plowing and transportation. Pleasure horses may be used for trail-riding, showing, driving or simply companionship.
- Taking care of or riding a horse is an excellent source of exercise. In addition, working with horses can relieve stress and anxiety.
- While domesticated, horses are independent creatures with minds of their own. Always consider safety first when working in and around horses. Never walk directly behind a horse. Avoid approaching a horse in its blind spot, directly in front.
