Help your college kid plan out her transition into college to make it easier on her. According to Ralph Manchester, physician and director of the University Health Service at the University of Rochester in New York, parents should help their kids transition into college while being involved and allowing your student to become more independent. For example, when you help your college student plan her schedule ahead so that she has plenty of free time in which to study, get from class to class and manage her calendar, she will have a higher rate of success in making this transition.

Talk to your college student about whether you should offer help, advises Mary Rooney, Ph.D., clinical psychologist for the ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute in New York. Ask him how much he wants you to be involved and come up with a plan before he heads off to college. For example, he might find it helpful if you provide a tutor to help him with classes or if you allow him to live at home while he is in college.

Check with your child’s college adviser to see what resources they have for students with ADHD, says USA Today. For example, some colleges offer students with ADHD additional time to take exams, as they often work more slowly than students without ADHD. You can also check with your child’s college to see if it offers assistance with taking notes and even record class lectures for students with ADHD. Since it is known that students with ADHD have a more difficult time concentrating, many colleges offer this as an alternative means of help. However, the availability and cost of additional help and services for students with ADHD is different at every campus.

Teach your child how to manage his medication. According to USA Today, it is a good idea to find a doctor near your child’s campus to treat your student so that she always has enough medication as well as the correct dosage to deal with her ADHD. This is particularly helpful if your child is attending school far away from home and has difficulty getting to the local pharmacy or to her doctor's appointments at certain times.
