Rugs were introduced in the market in the late 1960s and were totally different from the low piled rugs being made at that time. Then in the 1980s the low piled rugs and carpets became popular again especially in work places. Rugs were manufactured by creating loops of synthetic or wool material which were cropped to fashion them into a low pile.

Today shag as well as shag carpets are making a comeback. What was once considered old and outdated is now being rediscovered by old and new homeowners as a hip way to decorate a home. The rugs of today have deeper piles which are soft and fluffy than those in the 1970s. They also have a wide color and material selection. And just like those before them this generation of shag also need proper rug cleaning and attention to keep them looking new.

Here's how to do proper rug cleaning:

Frequent vacuuming: Vacuuming must be done regularly not just because of a lot of foot traffic but because there are so many viruses and bacteria in the air which can go to your rugs without you seeing them. You may vacuum your shag rugs at least two a week. Your shag rug must be vacuumed first from one direction and then slightly to a different angle so you will be able to restore your rug's pile. Other rug owners even utilize yard rakes to fluff up their shag rugs for guests.

It is important to note down that shag have a tendency to untangle or loosen easily. In shag rug cleaning upright vacuums are not advisable because the loops of the rugs might get entangles with the beater bars and rip them out. Canister vacuums with a standard floor brush are ideal for cleaning shag rugs.

If your shag rugs are small all you have to do is to bring them out and shake them. This is the easiest way in removing dust and dirt. In case signs of matting appear in your shag rug you just get a bristle broom and give your rug a good sweeping. This will help loosen the pile and bring it upright.

Regular rug cleaning

Shag rugs and carpet require required rug cleaning in order to take out the accumulated dirt and grime which can lessen the life span of the rug. Smaller area rugs can be cleaned using cold water in a washing machine with a gentle cycle setting provided they do not have rubber backing. After washing you may toss the rug in the dryer for about 3 minutes and hang over a clothesline or towel bar to dry.

Rug shampooers are required in cleaning large rugs. If you use a home shampooer your rug has to be clean at least once every quarter. Just like vacuuming it needs two runs of shampooer from the two directions to restore the pile.
A commercial machine can be rented in case you do not have your own. These are very powerful machines and are able to clean thoroughly the rug. You may do rug cleaning with such machine twice a year or depending on your lifestyle like if you have pets or a lot of kids in your home.

Furniture and traffic patterns will soon appear on the pile of your rugs and carpet which is why it is best for you to rotate or move your furniture and rugs around. Using a small whisk broom and a hand held potting rake you will be able to restore and bring back the pile under your furniture.
