The great Roman Colosseum is a cut stone amphitheater built between 70 and 82 A.D. It was largely used in the beginning as a place for gladiator games and hunts, organized by the Roman ruling class. Throughout the years, it has had various uses from church grounds to residences, and over the centuries has been battered by earthquakes and other natural disasters. The Roman Forum was once the bustling center of the ancient city of Rome. By the end of 7th century B.C., this area was a thriving marketplace and meeting spot for locals. Throughout history, Romans have built and rebuilt the area, so the ruins are from various centuries. Built around 320 A.D., the basilica has a huge dome and can hold up to 20,000 people. The Roman Pantheon is a well-preserved ancient Roman temple dating from around 118 A.D. This temple was built by Emperor Hadrian and was dedicated to the gods of Pagan Rome. It has been used as a church since 608 A.D., and has never been out of use. This use is the reason why the Pantheon building is in amazing shape today. The Trevi Fountain is a world famous structure seen in numerous movies and art, and is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. It was completed in the 1700s and is considered a theatrical piece of work. The god Neptune stands in the center of the fountain surrounded by two Tritons. Legend claims that if a visitor throws a coin into the fountain, he will return to Rome.
