Strength

• Safety chains are required for trailers in Washington, and each chain is classified by the weight it can tow. Class 1, which is also the minimum strength of chain allowed in the state, can tow no more than 2,000 lbs; Class 2, 3,500 lbs.; and Class 3, 5,000 lbs. If you need to tow more than that, your chain's strength must be equal to the weight of the trailer you're towing.
  
  

Connections

• Safety chains in Washington State must be equidistant from the connection in the center to the connection on the towing vehicle and the trailer. They also must be located in the center of each of the towing vehicle and the trailer.
  
  

Warning

• You may not weld the safety chain to either the towing vehicle or the trailer in Washington State. The slack on either side of the chain must also be equal, to allow for proper corner turning.
