2000 Firebird Performance Specs
- American automaker General Motors began selling the Firebird sports car through its Pontiac division in 1967. By the 2000 model year, the Firebird was in its fourth generation of production, having been most recently redesigned in 1993. Buyers could choose either a two-door coupe or a convertible, as well as one of three performance variants: the base model, the Firebird Formula and the performance-oriented Firebird Trans Am.
- The 2000 Pontiac Firebird uses one of two engines. The base model includes a 3.8-liter V-6 engine capable of producing 200 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 225 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine has a bore and stroke of 3.8 inches by 3.4 inches and uses an overhead valvetrain layout. With the V-6 engine, drivers could take the 2000 Firebird from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 16.4 seconds reaching a speed of 84 mph. The top speed is estimated at 105 mph.
Firebird Formula and Trans Am versions use a 5.7-liter V-8 engine shared with other GM performance cars of the era, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette. This larger engine has a bore and stroke of 3.9 by 3.62 inches. It produces 305 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, which can rise to 330 horsepower with the addition of the WS6 Ram-Air package, which includes functional hood scoops for forcing cool air into the engine. The V-8 also makes up to 345 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm. It can power the Firebird from 0 to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds, topping out at 107.4 mph. - For 2000, Pontiac offered the Firebird with three different transmissions. With the V-6 engine, drivers could choose from a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual transmission, both with overdrive. Drivers who chose the V-8 engine were given the choice between the same automatic transmission and a six-speed manual gearbox, also with overdrive.
- To transfer its power to the road, and stop safely, the 2000 Firebird comes with one of several wheel and tire combinations, as well as four-wheel disc brakes, all with anti-lock braking capabilities. The base model uses 16-inch silver or chrome alloy wheels with either P215/60SR16.0 touring tires or P235/55SR16.0 performance tires. For the V-8 versions of the Firebird, some models have 17-inch alloy wheels and P275/40ZR17.0 performance tires.
- Fuel economy on the 2000 Firebird varies based on the transmission and engine options. Base models can achieve 19 miles per gallon in city conditions and 30 mpg on the highway. A top-of-the-line V-8 model can only travel 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
