Seven Secrets of Successful Writers
And unless you were born with a "silver spoon" in your mouth, let me clear my throat and say it again.
You have to work at becoming successful.
But first of all, how do you define success? According to Webster's New World Dictionary, success means: turning out as hoped; having gained wealth, and/or fame.
And for those of you who, like me, desire a successful career in writing, I have some very good news for you.
The many successful writers who have gone before us, have left behind, intentional or not, a blueprint for success.
It used to be highly classified and very secretive information, but you are fortunate to be reading this article right now, because after many years of writing, and studying writers who resemble the look of success, and you know the ones of whom I speak, I have gained access to certain documents that has revealed this "blueprint of success" to yours truly, and I don't mind sharing it with you.
BEHOLD! SEVEN SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL WRITERS: 1 - WRITE DAILY - When you write daily, you must write in alignment with your aspirations.
In other words, align your work with the right opportunity for you.
Rewrite and refine your manuscript, of whatever genre, until it becomes perfect.
If it sells, you must repeat that process over and over again.
Good writing will always sell.
2 - LISTEN ACTIVELY - Keep your ear to the ground.
Listen actively, and closely to the advice of the experts in the field and take heed.
They know the ropes because they have traveled that road on which you are now embarking, countless times before.
3 - ASK QUESTIONS - If there is something that you don"t understand when you are attending a writer's workshop, seminar, or conference, you better ask somebody! Keep asking until you know and understand the answer fully and comprehensively.
There is no such thing as a dumb question, but if you don't know the answer, and you don't ask the question, that makes you a dummy.
4 - READ, BROADLY AND OFTEN - Be a voracious reader.
Digest and devour books, pamphlets, magazines, and periodicals on any subject matter that you come across through your research.
Whether it is published traditionally or electronically, these materials are to be consumed with a passion.
Do it all the time so you can always be up-to-date with the latest trends.
5 - REFLECT ON WHAT YOU HAVE READ - Be a veritable sponge and soak up, absorb, and store all the information you have obtained; refer to it often, gloss over it, and utilize their concepts until they becomes second nature.
6 - SET GOALS AND ESTABLISH DEADLINES - Create efficient goal setting routines that are doable.
Break your larger goals down into bite-sized portions that can be easily digested.
Set a date for completion, and honor it.
Be realistic.
Never set a goal that is impossible to attain.
Know your limitations, and finish what you set out to do.
Keep in mind that a trip around the world begins with one step.
7 - PRIORITIZE - Time is a writer's most cherished commodity.
Take care of the important tasks and assignments first.
If you squander a moment, you cannot get it back.
Have a strategy for putting assignments in their proper perspective, and stick to your guns.
Time waits for no one.
While there is no one true key to becoming a successful writer, and by successful, I mean a published author, a long, well-paid career can happen when you combine the aforementioned secret elements.
But no matter how many articles or books you read on becoming a successful writer, in order for it to take hold, and stick, you have to love, and care deeply for the craft of writing.
Henry Jackson van Dyke, a highly successful and prolific American author, educator and clergyman, said it best: "Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to.
