Who Are the Edmonton Eskimos?
Ownership
The Edmonton Eskimos Football Club is among just three teams in the CFL that are owned by local shareholders. This used to be the most prevalent sort of ownership in the CFL. There are no public shareholders, because the approval of 80 shareholders would have been needed in order to publicly offer the shares, but approval was not forthcoming. The Saskatchewan Roughriders, on the other hand, is an example of a community owned team that has publicly offered shares.
History
The Edmonton Eskimos started out in 1895, when the Alberta Rugby Football Union was formed. In 1897, the team took the name €Esquimaux,€ and in 1910, the name was officially changed to the Edmonton Eskimos. Since 1978, the home games have been played in Commonwealth Stadium.
Two former Alberta premiers (Donald Getty and Peter Lougheed) have played for the Eskimos, as have former Edmonton mayor Bill Smith, and Lieutenant Governor Norman Kwong.
The achievements of the Edmonton Eskimos, as previously described, have been recorded in Bob Peterson's book, €Decade of Excellence.€ That excellence is reflected in consistently high fan attendance.
Uniforms
The Eskimos uniform colors are green and gold. The colors were inherited from the University of Alberta football team, the Golden Bears, and have been worn since 1949. The jerseys have remained basically the same, with a few modifications. In 2001, the team began wearing white pants with their €away€ jerseys. Then in 2005, green pants were introduced, and in 2007, an alternate gold jersey came into use. Mainly, though, the Eskimos still use the green jerseys. The Eskimos, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Hamilton Tiger Cats were the only teams to alternate jersey and pants combinations within a season.
The Fight Song
At the third quarter of each home game, Bryan Hall, the legendary broadcaster, sings the €Eskimo Fight Song.€ It goes like this:
We're cheering fight, fight, fight on Eskimos
We're marching right, right, right on Eskimos
We're charging down the field for all to see
And shouting rah, rah, rah, fight on to victory
We're fighting on €til every game is won
The green and gold is bold and when we're done
We'll tell the world we're proud of Edmonton
And the Edmonton Eskimos
