How to Make a Costume of Angel Wings Out of Paper Plates

    • 1). Choose a shape for your angel wings. Find a picture or a free online pattern to mimic for the wings' shape.

    • 2). Measure from the wing wearer's head to just below her waist; cut out two pieces of poster board of this length. Draw one angel wing on a piece of poster board, copying the picture you are using as a model, or trace the pattern if you are using one.

    • 3). Cut out the first angel wing. Use the first angel wing to trace the second wing, then cut the second wing out.

    • 4). Cut the paper plates in half.

    • 5). Put one paper-plate half at the top of one angel wing to completely cover the top of the wing. Do not worry about the plate overlapping the edges of the poster board. Ensure the ruffled edge of the plate is facing upward and curved toward you, and glue the cut edge of the paper plate to the poster board.

    • 6). Glue the second plate half to the bottom of the wing, this time with the ruffled edge facing down and curved away from you. Glue two more paper-plate halves in the same way at the bottom of the wing, staggering them slightly to look like feathers. Cover the rest of the poster-board wing with plates in this fashion, with the ruffled edges facing down and curved away from you.

    • 7). Cut out only the ruffled edges from four of the plate halves. Use the ruffled edges to fill in the empty gap between the top feathers and the rest of the wing. Glue the ruffled edges facing upward and toward you, as with the top of the wing.

    • 8). Complete the second wing exactly as the first. Allow the glue to dry overnight. Trim the outer edges of the plates to match the outline of the poster-board wings.

    • 9). Prepare a connector for the angel wings using two whole paper plates held together to look like a space saucer. Punch four holes 1 inch apart along the right-side rim, then punch four holes on the left-side rim of the paper plates. Punch four corresponding holes in each angel wing so you can attach the wings to the wearer's shoulders.

Make the arm straps by cutting two 18-inch ribbon strands. Thread one ribbon strand through the top hole of one angel wing and through the top hole of the connector plates. Thread the other end of the ribbon through the bottom hole of the angel wing and the bottom hole of the connector plates.

Connect the other angel wing to the connector plates with the other arm strap. Reinforce and decorate the wing connector plates by tying a ribbon bow through the two open holes on the right side. Tie an identical bow on the left side of the plates through the two open holes.

Wear the wings by firmly fastening each arm strap to the front of the wearer's corresponding shoulder with a bow.
