In SIKKIM- scroll paintings are made called Thangkas which have pictures of Buddha's life; In MADHYA PRADESH- paintings are famous since pre-historic times.
There are rock shelters which have paintings of every phase of past in natural red and white colours.
Different communities here have different styles of painting.
For e.
g - type of wall painting called bhittichitras; hand-blocks painters also called chippas use vegetable colours and blocks covered with geometrical/floral patterns to make paintings; In CHHATTISGARH- bastar region has approximately 70% of tribes and so therefore rich in amazing art and craft.
They paint murals or bhittichitras with dots/lines.
To colour they use natural dyes from flowers/leaves.
Bastar's tribals either draw religious paintings of gods, paintings of biography of dead person or just imaginative paintings; In GUJARAT- the colours are used not only in paintings but also in fabrics.
Tie-and-dye painting or bandhani is an art in which knots are tied at specified places and in specified numbers on a fabric.
The fabric is then dipped in a required dark and natural dyes.
When the knots are opened, the tied part is left uncovered; In MAHARASHTRA- in ajanta caves, murals or paintings depicts the Buddha's life and Jataka tales.
The warli tribal women creates paintings on cow-dung plastered walls with rice powder and bamboo twigs.
The paintings include pictures of social activities, animals, birds, trees etc.
; In GOA- Fontainhas, is an old part where houses are specifically coloured in red, blue and yellow.
The roofs are clay-tiled; In ANDHRA PRADESH- to make leather puppets for theatre cured and dried goat skin is coloured with vegetable dyes.
Over here Kalamkari is an art in which cotton is painted with dyes either by blocks or bamboo pen called Kalam.
The Cheriyal village is famous for its scroll paintings.
The epics are depicted on the long, beautiful scrolls and carried every where by a story-teller who narrates those stories to the people; In KARNATAKA- card game of ganjifa tribe is famous across India.
A version called chad was designed for cards.
In this, cards were painted on a handmade paper with dyes and then lacquered; In KERALA- the painting art can be seen in the beautiful dance performance Kathakali.
The performers applies wide variety of colours in their make-up to reflect the nature of the character.
Like-green signifies nobility and black is for demoness and hunter and so many more colours and their signification...
In an art Kalamezhuthu, the kalam or pictures of deities are drawn on temple floors using fine vegetable colours.
The pictures are coloured while singing and dancing in a fixed steps.
They are then worshipped and erased.
Murals are seen here in temples and churches painted with only white, black, red, green and ochre.
Painters like Raja Ravi Varma was very famous over here; In TAMIL NADU- Tanjore style of painting is famous for its work on wooden board with gold leaf, gemstones and tamarind paste.
Basically, the pictures painted were that of lord Rama's and lord Krishna's.
