For different poker games players are using different types of bets, and small differences in protocol exist between poker rooms, but for the most part the following rules and protocol are observed by the majority of poker players. One thing dozens of people like to do is tinker with things. That's why, dozens of versions of poker games and rule variations exist. Most of us consider poker to be a great game but over the years, participants modified the rules just a little to make the game more interesting to them, the most common changes caught on and became new games in their own right. While there are many flavors of poker, there are mainly 3 top level variations - Draw Poker, Stud Poker, and Community Card Poker.

Among them, draw poker is probably the play most commonly played. In this game, you receive a complete hand before any bets are placed. These cards need to be hidden from the other gamers. Then by replacing a certain number of cards helps you improve your hand.

Normal Five-card Draw is a good example of draw poker. Then, another is stud poker, a version where you get a mix of face-down and face-up cards. This means gamers know some of the cards in your hand, but not all of them. Five-card stud is an example of Stud poker. The final is the community card poker is where your hand is combined with shared face-up cards. For example, if there are two aces in the community hand then everyone has 2 aces in their hand. That can make for some fascinating situations, and also makes for the others to have a very strong hand.

Rule variations are typically not their own game, but an advanced set of rules for specific plays. The Draw Poker game California Lowball makes a great example of this. Other rule versions might be using wild cards where a specific card can be used as any card you need. When he deals, Big Tony might say Deuces wild, meaning if you get a deuce, it can be anything thus 2 jacks and a deuce are taken as 3 jacks. Twist rules allow a participant to buy cards from the deck. If they can afford it, gamers can continue to buy card after card until they have the hand they need. This is a great way to add money to the pot and a fun way to lose your shirt. Sometimes the number of cards used will be reduced and it's called using a Stripped deck. Poker was originally played with only 20 cards, and this is a way to remember our pastime.

As you notice there are lots of ways a bet can be used as a useful tool. Pro gamers are know of all of these and you should be too. Rather than simply memorizing the examples for successful poker betting.
