How to Clean Your Bath Chairs and Bath Cushions

Bathing aids like bath chairs and bath cushions are very useful things, especially if you are constrained by limited mobility. These bathing aids are usually made to last, from sturdy and durable materials. However, there is nothing that does not need any maintenance. And while your bath chair or bath cushion may not exactly fall apart if you don't take care of them, they will certainly become breeding grounds for mould, fungus and bacteria. This could result in skin infections.

Here are a few tips to help you clean your bathing aids:

1. Daily cleaning: It is better to clean your bath cushion or chair a little bit everyday; this will ensure that your bathing aids don't accumulate too much dirt and grime in the long run. And it will be easier to clean them when they do become noticeably dirty.

Wipe down your bath chair or cushion with a dry towel or soft cloth after you finish bathing, every time you use them. Don't miss the crevices where the different parts of your bath aid join together. Then let it air dry thoroughly before you put it back in storage. In the case of a bath cushion, keep it inflated while it dries.

Never keep your bathing aids in the bathroom or shower stall itself. The high humidity will encourage the growth of mould and bacteria.

2. Monthly or periodical cleaning: Your bathing aids will develop some deposits of grime and mould over time, even with your daily cleaning routine. You will then need to clean them more thoroughly.

For a Bath Chair-You can wash the covers of a bath chair in a washing machine. If they have noticeable growths of fungus or mould, first wipe them down with a solution of ammonia and water. Use soap and water to clean the metal and plastic components. Don't use harsh solvents as these could break down the adhesive glue used to bond some of the plastic and metallic components together. Use an antibacterial spray on them after you have rinsed and wiped them. You can use a brush to clean these parts if you want, but make sure that it does not have hard bristles, or that you scrub them too roughly. This will scratch the chair's parts minutely. These minute scratches can become breeding places for microbes.

For a Bath Cushion-You can hand-wash a bath cushion in a solution of ammonia and water and/ or detergent and water. After you have finished rinsing it, inflate it and allow it to air dry. You can wipe it down with a towel if you want to speed up the drying process.

Your bathing aids must be completely dry before you use them again or store them away, especially after this kind of major cleaning. Otherwise, all your hard work might be wasted; lingering pockets of moisture can result in new mould and bacterial growth.
