- One of the few beaches with sand dunes in the San Diego area, the dunes at Coronado Beach are actually man made. Since 1988, Armando Moreno has been controlling the seaweed problem at the beach by burying it under sand. After a few years, dunes started forming from the pile up of sand. Covered with ice plant, the dunes found outside the Hotel Del spell out Coronado. Today the Navy uses the dunes for training exercises. Coronado was voted as the number two beach in the U.S. for 2011 by Dr. Beach, coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research.
- With over forty miles of area for activities from climbing the sand dunes, to hitting the beach and kayaking, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area extends along the Oregon Coast. It is the largest set of coastal dunes in the United States, constantly changing from the rain, wind and other factors. Day use fees are collected for visiting the recreational area, accessible through different areas including the South Jetty, the Umpqua Dunes Area and the Siltcoos Area.
- Some sand dunes, based on their composite of sand, naturally make sound. Located on the west coast of the island of Kauai, Hawaii, the Barking/Roaring sands off the coast at Polihale Beach are a tourist attraction for those interested in this natural phenomenon. Close to Mana, the dunes are made of a mixture of coral and shell fragments, unique compared to other booming dunes that are made of quartz. The sound comes from people walking across the hot sand.
