Repurpose 5-gallon metal cans that you find in commercial kitchens into homemade drums. Remove both ends with a can opener and clean the can out. Cover all the sharp parts with pieces of duct tape to protect your fingers. Stretch plastic over one end and tape it down with more duct tape. Heat-shrink the plastic with a regular hair blow dryer. Cover the plastic with muslin and secure it with tape around the edges. Brush on a layer of craft glue mixed with water. Once it dries, beat your drum.

    Oatmeal Container

    • Remove the lid of a cylindrical oatmeal container for another simple drum. Cover the opening with a soft post office envelope. Tape it down as tightly as possible with duct tape. Guide your child into decorating the drum with paints, markers and crayons. Glue on decorations, such as pom-poms, sequins and paper cutouts. Play the drum with your hands or a child's drumstick.

    Mixing Bowl

    • A large metal mixing bowl can serve as the base of a homemade drum. If you have drum skin material, stretch it over the bowl's opening. Secure it with duct tape around the sides of the bowl. Decorate the drum with paints or stickers. Craft homemade drumsticks with chopsticks. Wrap one end with duct tape to soften the sticks and the sound. Beat the taped end onto your handmade drum.

    Paint Bucket

    • Clean out an old plastic paint bucket to turn it into a homemade drum. Instead of stretching material over the opening, lay taut pieces of duct tape to create an entire drum top. Start from the center and lay a long piece of duct tape from side to side. Add another piece next to it, overlapping slightly. Add more tape until the opening is completely covered. Wrap the duct tape around the top of the bucket's opening over the other tape to secure it. Tap the drum on its sides and duct-tape top with drumsticks.
